About Our Products

Where are your yurts and geo domes made?

We manufacture our yurts in China by hand from the ground up with our team who have roots going all the way back to the home of Yurts – Mongolia. We then import to Australia and New Zealand. We design and refine our products in Western Australia and regularly build for our clients all over AUS and NZ, and we visit our China facilities multiple times a year to ensure the quality of our products and facilities.

What yurt and geo dome sizes are available?

We offer yurts in 4.5m (16sqm) all the way to 12m (100sqm). We offer geo domes in 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m and 9m sizes, with larger custom dome sizes also available.

If you are comparing sizes for glamping, guest stays or living use, download our Ultimate Buyers Guide on www.yurtinthedirt.com.au

What wind rating do your yurts and geo domes have?

Yurts and Domes are inherently strong in windy conditions due to their round shape. They can typically handle up to 100km/h winds. Domes are technically stronger than Yurts. Both Yurts and Domes disperse the wind load evenly around the structure. They are not cyclone rated however and are not warrantied against severe weather damage. But they are used all over the world in some very harsh climates and have stood the test of time.

How long do yurts and geo domes last?

Our Yurt and Geo Dome outer covers usually last 7 years before needing replacement (a replacement cover at that stage will cost approximately $2,000 delivered depending on size). The frame, doors, and windows can last 15+ years with proper maintenance.

What’s the difference between a Yurt and a Geo Dome?

A yurt and a geo dome can both work well for accommodation, retreats, studios and extra space, but they suit slightly different uses. Yurts offer a warmer timber feel, straighter walls, and an easier interior layout for living-style use, while geo domes feel more modern and are often easier to keep clean for guest accommodation.

If you are choosing between them for glamping, guest stays or Airbnb-style use, the best option usually comes down to the look you want, how you plan to use the space, and how important layout versus low-maintenance finishes is for your site.

Can I customise yurt and geo dome colours, windows and features?

Yes. Our yurts and geo domes can be customised with different colours and selected feature options. Yurts can be optioned with extra windows, doors and insulation, while geo domes can be configured with window and door layouts to suit the site.

Are yurts and geo domes suitable for year-round use in Australia?

Yes. Our yurts and geo domes are designed for year-round use in many Australian and New Zealand conditions. They are insulated, ventilated and suitable for a wide range of climates, with extra insulation options available for colder areas.

What is the best yurt or geo dome size for glamping, guest stays or full-time use?

The best size depends on how you plan to use it. Smaller sizes can work well for studios, guest rooms and simple glamping setups, while mid-size and larger models are usually better for premium guest stays, wellness spaces, or more comfortable longer-term use.

Yurt vs tiny house: which is easier and more affordable in Australia?

In many cases, a yurt or geo dome is simpler and more affordable than a tiny house, especially when speed, flexibility and lower upfront cost matter most. Tiny houses can suit some buyers better, but they often come with higher build complexity, transport considerations, and different approval pathways.

Take a look at our Yurts vs Tiny Homes comparison here https://yurtinthedirt.com.au/yurts-vs-tiny-homes-australia-comparison-2025/

What can you use a yurt or geo dome for?

Yurts and geo domes can be used for guest stays, glamping accommodation, wellness spaces, retreats, yoga studios, home offices, creative spaces, and extra room or simple living on rural or lifestyle properties. The right structure depends on your intended use, your site, and local council requirements.

Most of our clients complete their entire Yurt or Dome setup anywhere from $20,000 – $80,000

Installation & Setup

How difficult is it to set up a yurt or geo dome yourself?

Most of our customers find installation straightforward with 2 – 4 people for the smaller sizes and 4+ for the bigger sizes. The process takes 2–3 days for most clients. No specialised skills are usually required for the Yurt or Dome build itself, but the platform/foundation will need basic carpentry skills. We provide decking plans for building your platform, and we also have written and video instructions and phone support for the Yurt or Dome build. We can also provide a full build service if required with a growing network of tradies around Australia & New Zealand. See our other FAQ’s for a list of general tools required.

What kind of foundation or platform does a yurt or geo dome need?

Before you build your Yurt or Dome you’ll need a level, stable platform slightly larger than your yurt/dome diameter. Options include: Timber deck (most popular, plans provided) Concrete slab (we can recommend the right size and thickness) Compacted gravel, earthbags or other alternative bases can also work but are much less common. The platform must be level and adequately raised to keep the Yurt/Dome waterproof.

What tools are required to assemble a yurt or geo dome?

Most builds require basic tools such as a drill or impact driver, socket set, tape measure, spirit level, hammer, sealant and caulking gun, ladder or scaffold, and other standard assembly tools. You can find a more detailed list in our installation instruction manual. You can also watch our build videos on Youtube for example https://youtu.be/8p_-3X1C7jA?si=p6bccIjohqIJ-BMe

How long does yurt or geo dome installation typically take?

First-time installations usually take 2–3 days with 2-4 people. Experienced installers can complete it in 1-2 days. The platform/foundation is a separate project that typically takes another 2–3 days depending on complexity.

Do you offer yurt or geo dome installation services?

Most clients install themselves with friends or family. We provide decking plans, comprehensive guides and phone support. For the sub-frame/base, some expertise may be needed but many of our clients have also built their own decks. We can offer installation in South-West WA and have a growing network of installers across Australia & NZ we can connect you with.

Regulations & Requirements

Do yurts and geo domes need council approval in Australia?

Council rules for yurts and domes vary widely across Australia. Many councils classify them as temporary structures not requiring approval, but this isn’t guaranteed. We market our products as ‘glamping tents,’ but local regulations still apply based on your intended use. Key considerations: Your deck/platform may require approval even if the structure doesn’t For tourism/glamping businesses, we’ve successfully obtained approvals and can connect you with experienced planners. For residential use, be aware that yurts/domes don’t currently comply with Australian Building Standards. Rural and off-grid properties typically face fewer restrictions We recommend checking with your local council about your specific situation before purchasing.

Can you live in a yurt in Australia?

You can live in a yurt in Australia, but that does not mean it will be approved as a permanent dwelling. Many of our clients choose to live in Yurts or Domes full time but not necessarily with approvals.

Read more in our guide here https://yurtinthedirt.com.au/can-you-live-in-a-yurt-in-australia-in-2026/

Do council rules change by state for yurts and geo domes?

Yes. Council rules and approval pathways can vary widely by state, region and local council. The same structure may be treated differently depending on whether it is used for glamping, ancillary use, or residential use.

Get in touch to hear what may have worked for some of our clients in your area.

Are yurts and geo domes bushfire rated?

Our structures are not BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rated on their own, however we have achieved approvals in BAL29. In bushfire-prone areas, check with local authorities about placement and restrictions. Some customers in bushfire zones use them with additional protective measures. We have achieved full council approvals for accommodation businesses where the BAL requirements have been met through other means (access / egress etc)

Glamping & Business Use

Can you use a yurt or geo dome for Airbnb or glamping accommodation?

Yes. Yurts and geo domes can work very well for Airbnb and glamping accommodation when the site, approval pathway and guest experience all line up properly. They are commonly used for guest stays, retreat accommodation and tourism-style setups.

Take a look at our glamping article here https://yurtinthedirt.com.au/airbnb-glamping-australia/

Are yurts profitable for glamping or Airbnb in Australia?

They can be, but profitability depends on more than the structure itself. Location, approvals, nightly rate, occupancy, guest experience, and the total setup cost all affect whether the numbers work.

Maintenance & Longevity

What about mould and mildew in yurts and geo domes?

Our Yurts and Domes use mold resistant materials and are well insulated and ventilated. The outer covers are made from a durable double coated 850gsm vinyl which is fully waterproof if installed correctly. Our domes have a reflective bubble-cell insulation whereas our Yurts have a 10mm thick wool blend felt which is mold resistant. Both have glass opening windows and vents on the roof. All of this means our products don’t suffer from mold and mildew like traditional Yurts used to where the canvas would eventually hold moisture. It’s still possible to get mold if the Yurt or Dome is not kept clean and inspected for leaks or dampness, but most of our clients around Australia & New Zealand have no problems with mold and mildew.

How do I maintain a yurt or geo dome once it is installed?

Regular cleaning with mild detergent and a soft brush or broom is usually enough to keep your Yurt or Dome outer cover looking good. Inspect silicone seals around windows and doors annually and especially before winter. Replace if necessary. Sand and varnish wooden doors and window strips every 2-3 years (Yurts only). Inspect nuts / bolts / fixings and lubricate hinges. We have maintenance tips in our assembly guides provided with purchase.

Can I buy replacement parts for my yurt or geo dome?

Yes. We stock all components including covers, windows, doors, and structural elements. Replacement outer covers are the most likely purchase after around 7 years but rest assured if you want to add another Yurt door or you accidentally break a window we can assist with replacement parts.

How do yurts and geo domes perform in extreme Australian weather?

Our yurts and geo domes are designed for a wide range of Australian and New Zealand weather conditions, including wind, rain, hail and temperature extremes when installed correctly. They are not recommended for cyclone-prone areas during cyclone season, and performance always depends on site conditions and correct setup.
